ELITE Event Highlights

At Taste of Little Italy at Mepham

On May 25, Mepham High School students gathered after school for an elite event during which they learned how to order a meal in Italian.

World Languages teacher Caterina Dand, who organized the event, designed a program in which students learned the Italian language and explored the cultural differences between Italy and the United States.

Italian students volunteered to be "waiters" and took the orders of the participants. The attendees practiced their newly acquired expressions, placed their order from the menu and enjoyed a delicious Italian meal.

“The participants left with knowledge they could take with them on their future travels to Italy,” said Dand.

Mepham’s ELITE Program (Enriching Learners in Tomorrow's Education) is a promise to the future to enrich and inspire students by providing after-school enrichment opportunities designed to educate the whole student. The program encourages students to follow their passion and explore topics of genuine interest while developing the skills to be well rounded citizens and good thinkers for life after Mepham.

Yoga

On Monday October 19th, students took a break from their busy lives and focused on themselves by joining Ms. Langevin for an afternoon of Yoga. Students enjoyed a fun, playful and energetic afternoon which was designed to improve their strength and flexibility. They incorporated asana (poses), pranayama (breathing) and some relaxation.

littleBit Lab

Ever wonder how circuits work in the real world? On October 5th, Mepham students had the opportunity to create their own when the school library hosted their first ELITE event in Mepham’s new MakerSpace! littleBit modules are circuit-boards with simple, distinctive functions that are engineered to snap together with magnets. Modules each have a unique function (light, sound, sensors, buttons, thresholds, pulse, motors, etc.) and the modules snap together to make larger circuits. Using LittleBits, students created a prank handshake, a motorized Lego car that operates on the amount of light available, and a windmill generate from our 3D doodle pen whose speed is dependent on the noise level. This friendly competition stimulated the students creativity and they were able to problem solve when things didn’t work properly. The students went back to the design model and made adjustments to get things back on track.

Fall Planting Event

On September 24th, students had the opportunity to grow and maintain their own fall vegetables. Students received their own milk crates and had the choice of various herbs and fall vegetables to plant such as spinach, kale, cilantro, broccoli, broccoli rabe, etc. Students also had the opportunity to plant mums and pansies for beautification of the courtyard.
